“Use AI to go further than you could alone. Just make sure it's still you doing the going.”
Keep Your Spark Alive
I use AI all day, and I'll keep doing it. This isn't a note about AI being dangerous. It's a note to myself, and maybe to you, about the part of us worth protecting while everything gets easier.
There's a spark in doing hard things yourself. The struggle of working a problem out. The small thrill of figuring out something that didn't come easy. The taste you build from having done it a hundred times. That spark is where curiosity lives, and it's what makes your thinking yours.
AI can do more and more of the hard part for us now. That's genuinely wonderful. But it also means the struggle has become optional, and the struggle was never only a cost. It was how we grew.
So the thing to watch isn't AI. It's us quietly trading the spark for convenience, one skipped struggle at a time, until we notice we can produce a lot but feel like very little of it is ours.
Leaning on AI is fine. Leaning so completely that we stop thinking for ourselves is how the spark goes dim. And a dim spark is hard to notice, because everything still gets done.
So keep it alive on purpose. Do some things the hard way, not because you have to, but because the doing keeps you sharp and curious. Ask your own question before you ask the model. Form your own opinion before you check its. Let AI extend your thinking, not replace it.
The tools will keep getting better. The one thing they can't do is be curious for you, or care the way you care, or think the thought only you would think. That spark is yours. Protect it, and AI becomes the best thing that ever happened to your work. Lose it, and no tool will give it back.
